“ACTUALLY, IT’S NATURE ITSELF THAT CREATES THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PICTURES, I’M ONLY CHOOSING THE PERSPECTIVE.”
― KATJA MICHAEL
Emily has been immersed in the birth world her entire life. She was raised in a family with 14 siblings (all but four were born at home) . She has 59 nieces and nephews and has attended 12 of those births alongside her mother (who is also a doula). In addition, Emily has three babies of her own (one hospital birth, and two home births). “I wish I would have been able to have my first child’s birth documented. Even though it was a difficult experience, I have seen how incredibly healing looking back at photos of your birth can be. Being able to see small special moments, you would have otherwise missed while being immersed in your birthing focus, is such a gift! I love capturing moments like these for the families i work with. I would like to work with you!”
Emily has been capturing birth photos for her friends and family since she was 14 years-old! When she married her husband, also a photographer, in 2016, she joined him in his existing photography business and fully embraced the mission to document life alongside him. Over the last few years, she has decided to officially commit to birth work as a photographer and its showing to be a place in the world Emily is meant to be.
”I like to describe my photography style as lifestyle birth photography. My goal is to capture real-life moments that show both sides of birth- the raw moments in the beautiful story. My choice camera is a Canon R6. I go between sigma 50mm, sigma 3mm, and 100 macro lenses. I love that camera for birth because its a mirrorless model for sharp, clean images, its fast, and gets the job done. “
“When I am at your birth, I like to be a non-disruptive peaceful presence. I value your privacy and understand that the feeling of being watched could interfere with your birth. I’m quiet and peaceful and in the background, but confidently step forward to capture the moments you desire. Being a part of your birth team is a privilege I don’t take lightly, it is an honor each and every time I am invited into the birthing space. “
